01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled within the vibrant Roehampton campus, The Hive is much more than your average café—it’s a soulful retreat for coffee lovers and conscious eaters alike. Specializing in vegetarian and vegan fare, this charming spot crafts each dish with care, catering expertly to those seeking wholesome, sustainable options that never compromise on flavor. The menu may be modest in size, but it’s packed with hearty, satisfying bites that perfectly complement their beautifully brewed coffees.

Step inside, and you'll immediately feel the relaxed, bohemian vibe that defines The Hive. The cozy indoor seating mingles effortlessly with a sunny outdoor space, ideal for savoring a summertime coffee while unwinding or catching up with friends. It's a community hub where the energy is gently buzzing—largely fueled by university students, staff, and passionate locals—bringing a lively yet laid-back atmosphere that invites you to linger.

Customers consistently rave about the friendly, upbeat staff whose warm smiles brighten every visit. Tom Daly beautifully captures this spirit, mentioning not only the "beautiful coffees" but also how the café champions sustainability and waste management—a mission clearly embraced by the student body. Elizabeth Kinsey-James echoes this sentiment, highlighting both the quality of the vegetarian and vegan offerings and the genuine kindness of the team behind the counter.

The coffee here is nothing short of exceptional. Whether you crave a velvety cappuccino or a robust espresso, each cup is carefully crafted to ensure an indulgent experience. Complement those rich, aromatic notes with a freshly baked snack, and you have a pairing that feels like a small daily celebration of taste and mindfulness.

The Hive’s popularity is a testament to its quality, but it does mean food can sell out quickly, especially around midday, so timing your visit right is key. Some wish the café would extend its opening hours beyond 2:30 PM, like Thuy Tran, who longs for a later afternoon pick-me-up to power through evening library sessions—an idea that speaks to the café’s potential as a fuller-day haven.

This unique blend of warm community spirit, ethical values, and delicious offerings makes The Hive not just a café, but a cherished gathering place that nurtures both body and soul. Whether you’re a student in need of a quiet spot to work, a local appreciating conscientious cuisine, or simply someone craving expertly made coffee in a genuinely welcoming space, The Hive feels like a thoughtful, refreshing embrace amidst the hustle of London life.

Beautiful coffees and a bohemian, relaxed space outside to enjoy a relaxed summertime coffee. It is probably busier though during term time. Mostly vegetarian/vegan food too I believe. The students also seem to be doing some great work with sustainability and waste management.

Fantastic vegetarian/vegan food every day. Best coffee in the area. Staff are lovely and friendly. Generally a nice place to be! It's very popular so get down there for midday otherwise they may have sold out of food

This is the best cafe on campus with great coffee and vegan food. It would be perfect if it were only frequented by university staff and students - a great place to have a meeting, do a bit of work away from the office or just take a bit of time out. Unfortunately quite a few parents from the posh new housing developments nearby have discovered it - the kind of people who already ruin every single decent coffee shop in South West London with their need to broadcast their conversations to everyone around them by speaking as loudly as possible and ensuring their vile spoiled brats do likewise. We should not have to endure this in our own workplace. They also treat the campus like their local park and just stand by while their brats block the path of staff and students walking and cycling to lectures and meetings.

Amazing coffee, delicious snacks and great vibe! The best thing about The Hive really is the cheerful and friendly staff! Their smiles and upbeat attitude make me happy every time I come here. I wish they keep the shop open later than 2:30pm (till 4:30pm maybe) because it would be nice to have a snack and proper coffee before a late evening session at the library.

I love our local cafe at the university. Lovely food, coffees, teas, all reasonably priced. Everything is locally sourced, and they are green and sustainable. Service is great and they seem so cheerfulto be there. It's quite small, but when the weather is nice you can sit down outside and enjoy your meal/drink! Highly recommended.

As a college president I have often popped in for a coffee and a bite to eat, the Hive is a sustainable business, providing vegan, vegetarian and non vegetarian options, they always have a smile on their face and provide incredible service. If you are a student or you are passing by, please stop by this hidden gem in south west London, the building has also been created out of a shipping container which has been beautifully decorated, with an indoor seating area aswell as outdoor

Sustainable shipping containers converted into an adorable rustic café that brew the tastiest coffee around. They also offer oat milk (a favourite of baristas) and their food is locally sourced. Friendly service and a charming ambience.
